Why the Way Your Fine Wine Travels Matters More Than You Think

By February, 28 2026

Life in the UAE moves fast. One week we’re in a far-off city for work, the next we’re barefoot somewhere tropical, and before we know it we’re back home. We’re used to movement here — and we thrive on it.

But fine wine does not.

One of the things we teach at tastings is that great bottles are alive. They grow older. They evolve while resting. Over time, they develop the complex, layered characters that can only be achieved with patience. They mature beautifully in the right environment — and on the flip side, they break down if stored or transported incorrectly.

Fine wine is sensitive to light, temperature, vibration, and handling. And once you truly understand that, you begin to realise just how much the journey matters.

Light, for example, is more damaging than many people realise. Prolonged exposure can prematurely age a wine and degrade delicate aromatic compounds. It’s one of the reasons fine wines are bottled in dark glass and traditionally stored in cellars. Even retail display lighting can negatively affect wine over time.

Heat is also the enemy. It can prematurely age a wine, or even cook it in the bottle if things really heat up. The fruit flattens. The structure softens. The energy fades. The wine’s life comes to an early — sometimes abrupt — end.

Movement is another factor people rarely consider. In aged red wine excessive vibration during transport can disturb sediment suspending unwanted particles into a clear wine. Inconsistent storage conditions, such as temperature fluctuations, can cause a wine to develop unevenly, or even push the cork slightly from the bottle allowing oxygen to seep in and destroy the wine entirely. And the frustrating part? You won’t know any of this until it’s too late.

This is one of the reasons Crurated genuinely caught my attention.

They don’t simply trade wine on the secondary market and hope for the best. They source directly from producers. That one decision removes layers of uncertainty. There’s no mystery about previous storage conditions. No unknown stops along the way. The chain of custody is clear from the very beginning.
In addition, they individually track and authenticate every bottle through their digital system, giving buyers visibility and confidence over provenance from the estate to final delivery. That level of precision is not common — but for fine wine, it should be.

Crurated is now making a selection of their wine available in the UAE through local partnerships. Aside from their rigorous wine selection process, they take care throughout the import and storage process too. The wines are transported under strict temperature-controlled conditions and stored professionally in bonded, climate-controlled environments. They only source directly from the producer, meaning there is no opportunity for unknown intermediaries or previous owners to mishandle the bottle.

We may live lives that move quickly. But fine wine should travel carefully.

And in a market evolving as quickly as the UAE, knowing that your bottle has been sourced directly, stored properly, and handled with precision is no small thing. It’s the difference between drinking a label — and experiencing a wine at its best.

Crurated wine is now available in the UAE on the “City Drinks” website and App, under their “Open Cellar by Crurated” category.  Readers of The Tasting Class receive an additional 8% discount on these bottles by using the code tastingclass.
