At The Tasting Class, we’re always on the lookout for exciting wines, hidden gems, and unique finds in the UAE, and one of our favourite places to find them is Windmill Cellars in Ghantoot. If you love discovering bottles you won’t find on every Dubai wine list, Windmill Cellars is worth the trip. We were thrilled to find Pommery Champagne on their shelves, as we love a female-entrepreneur success story.
The Champagne House That Changed Everything
Pommery isn’t just any Champagne; it’s the Champagne that introduced Brut to the world. That crisp, dry style we all love today? Thank Madame Louise Pommery, the powerhouse behind this legendary house.
When she took over the business in 1858 after her husband passed away, Champagne was still sweet. But Madame Pommery had other ideas. Inspired by dry apple ciders, she created the world’s first Brut Champagne in 1874, flipping the industry on its head. And let’s be real—how many women were making waves in the Champagne world in the 1800s? Not many (as they were legally considered the property of their fathers or husbands and not allowed to own businesses).
As The Tasting Class is female-founded, this story pulls at our heartstrings. She wasn’t just a Champagne pioneer—she was a fearless entrepreneur who redefined luxury. She also built the incredible chalk cellars in Reims (which you can still visit today!) and set new standards for social responsibility in the industry. If she were around today, I’d like to think we’d be raising a glass of Pommery together—cheers to women shaking up the wine world!
If all this talk of trailblazing Champagne has you thirsty, here’s the good news: Windmill Cellars is the closest place to Dubai where you can buy Pommery, located only a 25-minute drive past Jebel Ali. It’s tax-free, and you can shop without a license.
Windmill Cellars isn’t just about Pommery, either. It’s packed with wines you won’t find elsewhere so close to Dubai, making it a goldmine for wine lovers. Next time you’re commuting between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, be sure to check out the epic selection.
Cheers to great wine, great women, and great finds!
