Johnnie Walker City Lights: A One-of-a-Kind Release at Dubai Duty Free

By January, 19 2026
You know that moment when you’re walking through an airport, making sure you’ve got all your luggage with you, and popping in for a quick stop at Dubai Duty Free — because the selection is huge, the prices are great, and the speciality products are always tempting… and you’re there anyway. You know you’ll kick yourself if you miss the chance to stock up. That was me at Dubai Duty Free the other day when I spotted the Johnnie Walker City Lights display.

I knew I had some work coming up with this product, so I wandered over for a closer look. What I didn’t realise was that every single bottle features different imagery. Not a single bottle is the same as another. From my previous experience with design and print runs, my immediate reaction was: How on earth do they do that? The answer, as it turns out, is AI.

The Johnnie Walker City Lights edition is part of a limited run of 50,000 AI-designed Black Label bottles, created exclusively for Dubai Duty Free — and no two bottles are the same. Not similar. Not “kind of different if you squint.” Completely, unmistakably unique. It’s honestly a little wild.

They currently have the night edition of the series in store, inspired by Dubai after dark — glowing skylines, electric energy, and shimmering lights. I found myself picking up bottle after bottle, turning them slowly, comparing details, and spotting little reminders of my own memories of the Dubai skyline.

What really gets me is how they’ve done it. These labels were created using generative AI and algorithmic design technology, developed through Diageo’s Project Halo. In plain English: clever tech, creative algorithms, and AI working together to produce thousands of distinct designs, all inspired by Dubai.

We talk a lot about craftsmanship in whisky — and rightly so — but this feels like craftsmanship meeting the future. Inside the bottle is the classic, dependable Johnnie Walker Black Label. On the outside, each bottle becomes a one-off collectible: a snapshot of Dubai’s energy at night as it exists right now. And there’s more to come — this is Drop 1: City of Lights, with Drop 2: City of Sun, inspired by Dubai by day, landing soon.

My advice? Even if you’re just passing through, stop and look — see each bottle’s individuality for yourself. And while you’re there… well, you might as well pick one up. Because when was the last time you bought a whisky where you could honestly say no one else in the world owns the same bottle?

The Johnnie Walker City Lights edition is exclusive to Dubai Duty Free, available at Dubai Airport and online at dubaidutyfree.com. It’s whisky, it’s art, it’s technology — and it’s unapologetically Dubai.
